Mermaid Coloring Pages

Half the mermaids on the internet are the same girl with the same wave of hair and the same blank tail. Every sheet here changes what she is doing, what her tail is made of, who is swimming next to her and where the whole thing is happening: six poses, six tails, six sea creatures, six places under the water and six sheets of shells.

Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid sitting on a rock above the waves Mermaid Sitting on a Rock The mermaid children ask for by name: perched on a rounded rock above the waves with her tail hanging all the way down its side and the fluke resting flat on the water. The rock, the tail and the hair are the three biggest areas on the sheet, so the easy shapes come first. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid swimming with a trail of bubbles Swimming Mermaid Swimming straight upward with the whole body bent into one long S curve, both arms stretched over her head with the palms together and her hair pulled back into separate streaming locks. Bubbles in three sizes rise past her between two tall ribbons of seaweed. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid diving down toward the seabed Diving Mermaid Head down and vertical, arms pointing at the seabed and her hair blown upward past her face, with the fluke reaching the very top of the paper. Two starfish and a scatter of pebbles wait on the sand at the bottom, which is where the whole drawing is heading. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid combing her hair with a shell comb Mermaid Brushing Her Hair A shell comb in one hand and a round mirror with a decorated frame in the other, with her hair drawn as dozens of separate curling locks reaching past her waist. It is the sheet for the child who wants to give every single lock a slightly different shade. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid leaning on a rock and waving Waving Mermaid Elbows on a low rock, one arm up and the hand open, looking straight out at whoever printed the page. Her fluke curls up behind the rock and a starfish is stuck to the front of it, so the picture has something small to finish with. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid leaping out of the water Leaping Mermaid Mid leap and completely clear of the sea, back arched and both arms thrown above her head, with the tail still cutting the surface below. Separate round droplets fly out all around her, and each one is its own closed shape rather than a grey smear. Download Free PDF
Mermaid tail coloring page with rows of large overlapping scales Mermaid with a Scaly Tail The classic tail, drawn properly: many rows of large overlapping scales, each one closed on itself, running the full length of the page and ending in a fan fluke with straight rays through it. Colour the rows in alternating shades and the whole tail still reads correctly. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a tail of long ruffled trailing fins Mermaid with Ruffled Fins The tail ends in long trailing fins like a betta fish, drawn as separate wavy bands that spread right across the paper with matching smaller ruffles at the hips. Most of the sheet is fin, so most of the colouring happens below the waist for once. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a smooth dolphin tail and a wide fluke Mermaid with a Dolphin Tail No scales at all: smooth skin from the waist down and a wide horizontal fluke split into two broad lobes, the way a real dolphin is built. It is the one tail in the set that is a single enormous open area, so it is the fastest of the six to finish. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a siren holding two curling scaled tails Two Tailed Mermaid The old carved siren with two tails instead of one, curling outward on both sides in matching symmetrical curves and each ending in its own fan fluke. She holds one in each hand, which is what keeps the shape readable rather than confusing. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a tail covered in small heart shaped scales Mermaid with a Heart Scale Tail Every scale on this tail is a small heart instead of a rounded scale, with a row of larger hearts edging the fluke and more of them floating up around her. It is a counting sheet by accident: children start colouring and end up totting the hearts up. Download Free PDF
Mermaid tail coloring page with a scaled tail curled on the sand A Mermaid Tail on the Sand The tail by itself, curled in a loose spiral on wet sand with the fluke lifted at the tip and four different shells lying around it. Nobody is attached to it, which is exactly why children keep asking what happened here. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid swimming beside a dolphin Mermaid and a Dolphin Swimming shoulder to shoulder with a smiling dolphin, one hand resting on its back, both of them heading the same way. The dolphin is all smooth curves and the mermaid tail is all scales, so the two halves of the sheet need two completely different hands. Download Free PDF
Seahorse coloring page with a mermaid riding a large seahorse Mermaid Riding a Seahorse A seahorse ridden like a pony, with its curled tail still wound round a stalk of seaweed so nobody is going anywhere yet. The ridged crest, the tube snout and the ring markings down its body are all drawn as separate shapes to fill. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid holding onto a sea turtle shell Mermaid and a Sea Turtle A sea turtle the size of a table, its shell divided into big separate plates that can each take their own colour, with the mermaid holding gently onto the rim. Four broad flippers spread right across the page and keep the picture wide. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a school of striped fish swimming past Mermaid and a School of Fish A whole school of striped fish streaming past in rows above her and rows below her, every one of them facing the same way and drawn with its own bold stripes and its own tail fin. The mermaid puts an arm out and the school parts around it. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid and a smiling octopus Mermaid and an Octopus A handshake with an octopus, all eight arms out and curling in eight different directions with rows of little round suckers drawn along each one. Counting the arms and then counting the suckers is half the reason this sheet takes so long. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid swimming among three jellyfish Mermaid and Jellyfish Three jellyfish in three sizes, each with a domed bell dotted all over and long wavy tentacles hanging far below it as separate flowing lines. The mermaid swims up between them and takes care not to touch anything. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid swimming through a coral reef Mermaid in a Coral Reef Four kinds of coral drawn as four genuinely different shapes: antler branches, brain corals with winding grooves, anemones with waving tentacles and a fan coral with a net pattern through it. Small fish hide in the gaps between them. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid at a sunken shipwreck Mermaid at the Shipwreck An old sailing ship lying on its side with a snapped mast and torn sail cloth, its hull built plank by plank so the wood can be coloured board by board. The mermaid is looking out of one of the four round portholes. Download Free PDF
Mermaid castle coloring page with an underwater castle and spiral towers Underwater Mermaid Castle Three spiral twisted towers with pointed roofs, windows cut in the shape of fan shells and a gate framed by two enormous spiral shells. A path of round stepping stones runs up to the door, so the sheet has somewhere to start. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with an open treasure chest full of coins and pearls Mermaid and the Treasure Chest A wooden chest thrown wide open on the sand with iron bands, a big keyhole and a heap of round coins spilling out of it. A string of pearls hangs over the edge, a goblet stands inside and a crab is walking off with none of it. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid swimming up through a kelp forest Mermaid in the Kelp Forest Long ribbons of kelp rising in columns from the seabed to the top of the paper, with straight beams of sunlight coming down between them and small round floats along the stems. Colour the beams pale and the whole page suddenly has depth. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid in a lagoon under a waterfall Mermaid in a Lagoon Above the water for once: elbows on a flat rock in a calm lagoon with a waterfall behind her, drawn as separate vertical streams that break into a ring of round droplets. Broad leaves hang over the rock and ripple rings spread out across the surface. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid asleep inside a giant clam shell Mermaid Asleep in a Giant Clam Curled up asleep inside an open giant clam, both halves of the shell drawn with deep ridges radiating from the hinge out to the wavy rim. A single large pearl sits on the sand beside it. This is the bedtime sheet of the collection. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid sitting on a giant scallop shell throne Mermaid on a Shell Throne A throne carved from one enormous fan scallop, its deep ribs fanning out wide behind her and a line of small pearls set along the rim. Two spiral shells make the arms, and her tail is draped over the front edge. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid putting seashells into a basket Mermaid Collecting Shells Four shells drawn large and genuinely different: a long spiral conch, a ribbed fan scallop, a pointed cone and a smooth cowrie, going one by one into a woven basket with the weave drawn as a proper over and under grid. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid blowing a large spiral conch shell Mermaid Blowing a Conch Cheeks puffed out and a huge spiral conch held up like a trumpet, its coiled spire, flared mouth and knobbly ridges all drawn as separate shapes. Three curved sound lines come out of the wide end and two fish are already leaving. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a mermaid wearing a crown and necklace of pearls Mermaid with a Pearl Crown Close in from the shoulders up, wearing a tall crown of separate round pearls set into branching coral points, with a graded pearl necklace and pearl drops at her ears. Every pearl is drawn big enough to be coloured on its own. Download Free PDF
Mermaid coloring page with a house made from a giant spiral seashell Mermaid Shell House A whole house made from one giant spiral shell, coiling round several times, with a round door, a starfish for a knocker and a lantern hanging beside it. There is even a little fenced garden of sea plants out front. Download Free PDF
Easy mermaid coloring page for toddlers with very thick simple outlines Easy Mermaid for Beginners A few big shapes and nothing else: a round head, a rounded body, two arms and a wide tail carrying three enormous plain scales. The outline is deliberately fat and there is not a narrow gap anywhere, which is what a three year old actually needs. Download Free PDF
Mermaid face coloring page with one giant smiling mermaid head Big Mermaid Face One face and nothing else, blown up until the hair touches all four margins. Two huge eyes with long lashes, a headband of three big flowers and a starfish tucked in at one side. The first sheet here a two year old can attempt without help. Download Free PDF
Kawaii mermaid coloring page with a chibi mermaid and floating stars Kawaii Mermaid Head far too big, body far too small, both eyes shut into happy upward curves and two round blush circles on the cheeks. The tail is a short stub carrying one row of very fat scales, and four chunky stars float around her. Download Free PDF
Realistic mermaid coloring page with detailed scales and strands of hair Realistic Mermaid Careful proportions and fine line work throughout: hair separated into individual crossing strands, hundreds of small scales that shrink as they run down toward the fluke, and thin rays drawn through the fluke membrane itself. Download Free PDF
Mermaid mandala coloring page with rings of starfish, shells and curling waves Mermaid Mandala A mermaid curled up asleep at the dead centre, ringed by repeating bands of starfish, curling waves, plain circles, scallop shells and fanned tail shapes. Colour it ring by ring and it comes out symmetrical, which is what a mandala is for. Download Free PDF
Zentangle mermaid coloring page for older children with patterned panels Zentangle Mermaid The hair, the body and the tail all cut into panels, and every panel given a different filling: stripes here, spirals there, then scales, waves, dots and cross hatching, with a band of small shells along the bottom. The longest sit of the whole collection. Download Free PDF

The problem with mermaid coloring pages is the tail. It is the biggest shape on the paper, it is usually drawn as one smooth empty outline, and a child fills it in with a single green pencil in about forty seconds. Then the sheet is over. Everything above the waist got three minutes of attention and everything below it got one colour.

So the tail is treated here as the main event rather than the leftover. Six of these 36 sheets exist only to change what it is made of, and on every other sheet in the collection it is drawn with something to hold a colour: rows of overlapping scales, long trailing fins, a smooth dolphin fluke, or a pattern of small hearts. A tail broken into forty closed scales is forty decisions instead of one, which is the difference between a page a child finishes and a page a child abandons.

The sheets fall into six groups, and the groups exist because a three year old with a fat crayon and a nine year old with fineliners want opposite things from a mermaid.

Six poses, from sitting still to leaving the water

The first sheet is the one children ask for by name: a mermaid sitting on a rock above the waves with her tail hanging down the side of it. After that she swims straight up in one long S curve with her hair streaming behind her and bubbles rising past her, dives head first toward the seabed with her fluke high above her, sits combing her hair with a shell comb in front of a round mirror, leans on a rock waving straight out at whoever printed the page, and finally bursts clear out of the water in a full arc with spray flying off her.

Six tails, and every tail colours differently

This is the axis that decides how long the sheet lasts. The classic tail is rows of large overlapping scales, each one a closed shape of its own. The ruffled tail ends in long trailing fins like a betta fish, drawn as separate flowing bands. The dolphin tail is smooth skin with no scales at all and a wide horizontal fluke, which is the one to hand a child who wants a big open area. The double tail curls away on both sides at once, the way the old sailors' sirens were carved. The heart tail replaces every scale with a small heart. And one sheet is the tail on its own, curled on wet sand among shells, with no mermaid attached to it.

Six sea creatures, because nobody swims alone

A dolphin swimming alongside with its beak up and its own smooth flippers. A seahorse ridden like a pony, its curled tail wrapped round a stalk of seaweed and its snout and dorsal fin drawn properly. A sea turtle with its shell divided into big plates a child can colour one at a time. A whole school of striped fish streaming past in one direction. An octopus with all eight arms out and rows of suckers drawn along them. And three jellyfish with domed bells and long trailing tentacles.

Six places to be under the water

A coral reef of branching corals, brain corals and anemones. A wrecked sailing ship on its side with a broken mast and a row of round portholes. A castle with spiral towers and windows shaped like scallop shells. An open treasure chest spilling coins, pearls and a goblet. A kelp forest of tall ribbons with sunlight coming down through them in straight beams. And a lagoon at the surface, with a waterfall and big leaves hanging over the edge of the rock.

Shells, pearls and the things made out of them

Asleep inside a giant clam with a pearl beside her. A throne carved from one enormous scallop shell, standing on the sand. A basket being filled with four clearly different shells: a spiral conch, a fan scallop, a cone and a smooth cowrie. A big conch shell blown like a trumpet. A crown of pearls and branching coral, drawn close enough to count them. And a whole house made from a giant spiral shell with a round door and a round window in it.

Thick lines and fine lines

The two ends of the collection. Two sheets are drawn for small hands: a mermaid built from a few big simple shapes with no narrow gaps anywhere, and an enormous mermaid face that reaches all four margins. At the other end sit a realistic mermaid whose scales and hair are drawn strand by strand, a mandala with a mermaid at the centre of rings of shells and waves, and a zentangle panelled into stripes, dots, spirals, scales and cross hatching.

What age are these mermaid coloring pages for?

Three to ten years old. The two beginner sheets use very thick outlines and wide open areas that a three year old can stay inside. The poses, the sea creatures, the settings and the shell sheets suit five to eight. The mandala, the zentangle and the realistic sheet are fine line work and are meant for older children.
