Heart Coloring Pages

A heart is the first shape most children draw on purpose, so this is a good page to hand a child who is just starting. Every sheet here is a different heart: plain and enormous for a toddler, patterned and intricate for an older child, and a good number that are hearts with company.

A heart is easy to love and surprisingly hard to buy well. Search for one and you get the same clip-art outline over and over, at four different sizes, on twenty different sites. Which is fine for exactly one afternoon, and then a child who has coloured one plain heart has no reason to colour another.

So these 36 sheets are built as a set of clearly different hearts rather than one heart repeated. They fall into six groups, and the groups are there because a three year old and a nine year old need genuinely different paper.

Heart styles

The same shape, drawn six ways. A plain outline with one shine mark on it. A heart split into bands of stripes, dots and zigzags. A symmetrical heart mandala. A round-cheeked kawaii heart with a face. A heart broken into stained glass panes. A heart filled with rolling swirls. Between them they cover almost every phrasing people use for this page, from simple heart to heart mandala.

Hearts arranged on the page

Sometimes the interesting part is not the heart but how many of them there are. There is a page covered in small hearts, a heart wreath in a ring, three hearts nested inside each other, a garland of heart bunting, a bunch of heart balloons on curly strings, and a glass jar packed to the lid.

Hearts with company

A heart wrapped in daisies and roses. A heart with a pair of spread wings. A heart in a field of stars. A heart crossed by an empty ribbon banner, which is the one to print when a child wants to write a name on it. A heart-shaped padlock with its key. A rainbow dropping hearts out of a cloud.

Hearts for an occasion

Valentine's day gets the arrow through the heart. Mother's day gets a bouquet of heart-headed tulips. Friendship gets two hands making a heart between them. There is a thank you card, a birthday cupcake with a heart on a stick, and an envelope with a letter sliding out of it.

Easy hearts and detailed hearts

The two ends of the set. Three chunky hearts with extra thick lines and nothing inside them will keep a two or three year old busy without a single narrow gap to worry about. At the other end there is a fine zentangle heart, a lace doily, a patchwork quilt and a faceted gemstone, all of which will hold a nine year old for an hour.

Hearts and animals

For the child who would rather colour a creature. A teddy hugging a heart, a cat with one between its paws, a puppy carrying one in its mouth, a butterfly whose wings are hearts, an owl on a branch and a bunny with a basketful.

What is the best paper for heart coloring pages?

Ordinary printer paper is fine for crayons and coloured pencils. If a child is using felt tips or paint, print on the thickest paper the printer will take, around 160 gsm, so the colour does not bleed through and the sheet stays flat enough to put on a wall afterwards.
